In Home, Perspective

Its finally here…well the album cover and tracklist anyway. Three days separate us from National Kendrick Lamar Day, and it’s set to be a good Friday indeed. I’m sure that Top Dawg, and K.Dot himself, are aware of the mass disappointment caused by his last utterances on The Heart Pt. 4 – “y’all got ’til April the 7th to get y’all shit together” – and have decided to do something, that rappers seldom do anymore, and share the official album tracklist with us in advance of the album release:

Similar in length to his previous offerings, DAMN. looks like a 14-track LP with a clear and consistent theme throughout – humans. At this stage it’s difficult to even picture how these songs will be delivered but with each song titled a one-word emotion, feeling or a PROPER noun, it’s evident that Kendrick is poised to deliver yet another classic album based on a set of familiar complex human constructs, both to himself and any disciples to his music.

With a long list of collaborative producers, the Alchemist, Mike Will Made-It, 9th Wonder, James Blake and BADBADNOTGOOD, but to name a few, Cornrow Kenny is clearly focused on using different sounds and influences to produce another vivid musical experience. With the addition of RiRi and U2 (yes, U2), as the only artists to be credited with a feature on this project, this is probably the most intriguing Kendrick album to date.

There is something to be said about the way in which the Compton native is delivering this particular album: The Heart Pt. 4HUMBLE… production credits… album cover and official tracklist. Two songs that serve as an entree and a full breakdown of everyone that’s contributed to the album + the song titles, for the main course. And then there’s Friday… the dessert. We live in an age of music plagued by leaks, ghostwriters and fake news, buts it’s apparent that TDE and Lamar are using transparency to cut all the BS and keep it strictly about the music.
